新年快乐!Happy new year to all of my friends who celebrate. I hope that the year of the water rabbit brings us all peace, patience, wisdom, and many blessings in the months ahead.
Today I passed the final exam for the Training in Adoption Competency course I took this past year. While I’m glad for this public recognition of my knowledge, it feels strange to have a slip of paper label me as “competent” in information I have, in some cases, lived and known my whole life. When thinking about who is and can be considered “adoption competent”, I think about the financial barriers I was able to overcome in obtaining my MSW degree as well as the generous scholarship I received to take this class and my ability to have my workplace pay for the separate exam. I also wonder why so few classes on child welfare and adoption exist at the graduate level when so many social workers become child welfare workers and why a training program like this is elective and not required for those working with adoptees and adoptive families.
Hello friends~ do you want to make your voice heard while advancing science and adoption/adoptee research? My friend @lil.jiwoo is working with @oh_myo_kim at @bostoncollege on a study examining Asian American adoptees’ experiences with pregnancy. I am happy to pass on this opportunity and happy that we adoptees are expanding adoption research to look at our experiences across different stages of the life course. Email kimrt@bc.edu if interested.
